Which grammar mistakes do TOEFL students make most?
We read the corrections in the 8,000 most recent writing responses we evaluated, and 362,540 sentence-building answers from the last six months. The grammar that costs students marks is not the grammar most textbooks spend the most time on. Conditionals and the passive, which fill whole chapters, were among the strongest areas, at about 83 percent correct. Word order was among the weakest: sentences with time and place phrases went wrong one time in three, and a single adjective-order sentence was missed two times in three.
These are counts of corrections in feedback, so they show what appears most often, not what costs the most on its own. The Grammar That Actually Moves Your Band explains which errors raters weigh most heavily.
| What was corrected in student writing | Responses with at least one |
|---|---|
| Prepositions | About 3 in 4 |
| Helper verbs (be, do, have) | About 7 in 10 |
| Articles (a, an, the) | About 2 in 3 |
| Singular and plural nouns | About 1 in 2 |
| Punctuation and capitals | About 1 in 4 |
| Verb and word forms | About 1 in 4 |
1 in 3Complete the Words boxes missed in 12,000 Reading sections
Words cost marks in Reading too. We looked at 123,670 Complete the Words boxes from 12,000 Reading sections taken since September: students missed a third of them. Of the misses, about one in four started right and ended wrong, like explosion where the sentence needed explosive, about one in six were a letter or two away from the right spelling, and nearly one in three were left empty. Word forms, spelling and academic vocabulary each train one of those, with the same half-word box the exam uses. When the box feels easy, take it into the real task in Complete the Words practice.
Why this is built for the exam
Students who write to us about grammar often say the same thing in different words: they know the rule, and under time pressure it disappears. So every level does three things a grammar book cannot.
Misses come back
A question you miss comes back at the end of the level.
A review list
Your mistakes stay in a review list until you get them right.
Speed rounds
Once you clear a level, a speed round replays it against the clock, because knowing a rule and using it without stopping to think are different skills.
When you are ready to use it for real, take a timed writing practice test or drill the exam tasks in Practice Exercises.
