About the Test

What Is the TOEFL iBT 2026?

The TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is the world's most widely accepted English proficiency exam for university admissions. Starting January 21, 2026, ETS introduced the biggest format overhaul in the test's history, making it shorter, more adaptive, and more focused on real-world communication skills.

The 2026 TOEFL takes 1 hr 23 min – 1 hr 29 min (down from about 2 hours) and tests four skills: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. It uses multi-stage adaptive testing for Reading and Listening, meaning the difficulty of your second module depends on your first-module performance. The test introduces entirely new task types like Complete the Words, Listen & Repeat, Build a Sentence, and Write an Email, while removing all integrated tasks from the old format.

Scoring now uses a 1-6 band scale with 0.5-point increments, aligned to CEFR levels (A1 to C2). Most universities require a band score of 4.0 or above, equivalent to B2 on the CEFR scale. Our free practice tests mirror every aspect of this new format so you can prepare with confidence.

Full tests include all 4 sections (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) and take 1 hr 23 min – 1 hr 29 min per ETS spec, simulating the complete TOEFL experience. The 2026 TOEFL uses a 1-6 band scoring scale with 0.5-point increments, aligned to CEFR levels (A1 to C2). Each section receives a band score, and your total is the average of all four sections. During the 2026-2028 transition period, both old (0-120) and new band scores appear on score reports so universities can adjust their requirements.

Reading, listening, and writing each have 16 numbered tests in the new 2026 format. Reading has 50 questions across 2 modules, listening has 47 questions across 2 modules, and writing has 12 items across 3 task modules. Speaking is still organized as section practice. Start with Test 1 and work your way through the rest at your own pace.

The January 2026 update shortened the test to 1 hr 23 min – 1 hr 29 min, introduced multi-stage adaptive testing for Reading and Listening, added new task types (Listen & Repeat, Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Complete the Words), removed all integrated tasks, and introduced 1-6 band scoring aligned to CEFR levels.

Start by taking a full-length practice test to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Then use section-specific tests to target areas needing improvement. Begin with easy difficulty and work up to hard. Focus on the new task types rather than memorizing templates. Practice regularly and review your scores to track progress over time.

Reading and Listening sections are scored instantly with a detailed breakdown showing your band score, correct/incorrect answers, and explanations. Speaking and Writing require expert evaluation and results are delivered via email within 24-48 hours with personalized feedback on each task.

Yes. All 80 tests run on phones, tablets, and desktops. The interface adapts to your screen size — split panes stack vertically on small screens, the toolbar compacts to keep the timer and navigation visible, and answer options use larger touch targets. Recording uses the device's built-in microphone for Speaking, and the on-screen keyboard works for Writing. Same flow, same scoring, every device.

No. Any modern phone, tablet, Chromebook, laptop, or desktop with a recent browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox, Samsung Internet) works. There is no app to install — add the page to your phone's home screen for one-tap access. The system check verifies microphone, audio, and storage on your specific device, and never blocks based on screen width.
