The TOEFL Writing section in the 2026 format consists of 3 tasks with 12 total items and a 24-minute time limit. Module 1, Build a Sentence, gives you 10 items (6 minutes 30 seconds total) where you arrange word chunks into a grammatically correct sentence within an avatar dialog. Module 2, Write an Email, gives you 7 minutes to read a campus situation and compose a 100–150 word reply that addresses every required point. Module 3, Write for an Academic Discussion, gives you 10 minutes to read a professor’s question and two student replies, then post a position of at least 100 words. Each module has its own timer; you cannot return to a previous module. Scores range from 1 to 6 on the new 2026 band scale.
