Quick answer
A vocabulary in context question highlights a word in the passage and asks which option is closest in meaning. The word is highlighted where it appears, so its sentence is always visible. The answer is the meaning the sentence forces, not the most common dictionary meaning, and you test candidates by substituting them back in.
What this question is really testing
The stem looks like a vocabulary test: "The word X in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to". Students therefore treat it as one, and study for it by memorising word lists. That is a partial reading of what is happening.
What the question actually measures is whether you can pin a word down using the sentence around it. Half the time the target word is one you know, and then the question is checking that you know which of its senses is operating. The other half it is a word you do not know, and then the question is checking that you can derive a meaning from context rather than freezing.
Both halves are answerable without having memorised the word. That claim sounds optimistic and it is testable: take any vocabulary question from a practice test, cover the target word entirely, and try to answer it. Most of the time you can, because the sentence has already told you what belongs in that slot. Academic prose is redundant by design, and definitions cluster around unfamiliar terms.
The variant you will also meet is not "closest in meaning to" but "refers to": "The word antigens in paragraph 2 refers to". That form nearly always has an explicit definition in the passage, frequently in the same sentence introduced by "which are" or "called". When you see "refers to", go looking for the definition rather than reasoning about the word.
The substitution test, step by step

Read the sentence with the word covered
Literally block it out. Read the sentence as if there were a blank there. Then say what you would put in the blank, in the simplest words you have. If the sentence reads "the electrolyte becomes more BLANK, and ions move through it more slowly", you would put "thick" or "sticky", and you have solved the question before reading a single option.

Check the grammatical class
Whatever fills the blank must be the same part of speech as the target. This eliminates options quickly and it is free. A noun option cannot answer an adjective slot no matter how related the meaning is.

Read the options and find the nearest match to your own word
Not the nearest match to the target word in general. The nearest match to what you decided the slot needed. This ordering is the whole technique, because it stops you being drawn to the option that matches the word most familiar sense.

Substitute your chosen option back into the sentence
Read the whole sentence aloud in your head with the option in place of the target. If the sentence still says what it said, you have it. If it now says something slightly different, or it needs an extra word to work, you have the wrong option.

If two options both survive, go to the next sentence
The sentence after the target almost always disambiguates. Passages develop their claims, and the development tells you which sense was meant. This is where the harder vocabulary questions are decided.
Why the dictionary answer often loses
The commonest way to get these wrong is to know the word.
Take "consolidates". Most students who know it know it from consolidating debts or consolidating power, so the sense that arrives first is something like "combine into one". The passage says the brain "consolidates declarative memories" during deep sleep. The option "combined into a single memory" is available and it is wrong. The correct option is "strengthened and made stable", because that is the sense the sentence supports: the surrounding text is about repair, immune strengthening and memory becoming durable.
Or take "pervasive". Students often gloss it as "harmful" because it usually appears near unpleasant things. It means widespread, found everywhere. A passage on cognitive biases calling them pervasive is saying they show up everywhere, not that they are damaging, and an option about damage will be sitting right there.
The pattern is that partial knowledge produces a confident wrong answer, while no knowledge produces careful contextual reasoning and a right one. This is genuinely counterintuitive and worth internalising: on this question type, feeling certain because you recognise the word is a warning sign, not a green light. The substitution test costs eight seconds and it catches exactly this error.
The second reason the dictionary answer loses is register. Academic passages use words in their formal, technical senses. "Conching" in a passage about chocolate manufacture is a processing step, not anything you could derive from general English. "Impervious" in a passage about the water cycle means water cannot pass through, not that someone is emotionally unaffected. When a word has a common everyday sense and a technical one, the passage is using the technical one.

The word sits in a list with words you do know.
"disease, loss of habitat, and the use of certain chemicals" tells you the unknown item is a threat, not a benefit.
Five ways passages hand you a meaning. In our shipped material, at least one of these is present for almost every vocabulary target.
What to do with a word you have genuinely never seen
It will happen, and the correct emotional response is none at all. Here is the procedure.
Decide the polarity first. Is this word positive, negative or neutral in this sentence? You can nearly always tell from what surrounds it. If a passage says degradation "seals" the soil surface so water "runs off rather than soaking in", any unknown word in that sentence is on the bad side of the ledger. Polarity alone often eliminates two of four options.
Then decide the grammatical role. Noun, verb, adjective. This eliminates more.
Then use morphology, carefully. Prefixes and suffixes help: "im-" and "in-" often negate, "-ify" makes verbs, "-ous" and "-ive" make adjectives. But do not push it. "Invaluable" does not mean not valuable. Morphology narrows the field, it does not decide.
Then substitute the survivors. With two options left and a sentence in front of you, reading each one in place usually settles it inside ten seconds.
If you are still stuck after 45 seconds, guess and leave. One vocabulary question is one raw point and there are 49 others. Students who spend two minutes on an unknown word are converting one uncertain point into one uncertain point while losing two elsewhere.

Always read the sentence. The word is highlighted in the passage for this reason.

Match the part of speech first. It is free elimination.

Practice: six vocabulary questions
Three target words you probably know, three you may not. The reasoning shows which context clue decided each one.
The Atacama receives less rainfall than almost anywhere on Earth. Some weather stations there have recorded no measurable precipitation across decades of observation. In such arid conditions, decomposition slows almost to a halt, and organic material that would rot within months elsewhere can persist for centuries.

The two preceding sentences are entirely about the absence of rainfall, and "In such arid conditions" points back to them. The consequence clause about decomposition slowing also depends on dryness. Two independent context clues, both pointing at dry.Cold also slows decomposition, which is what makes this option work as a distractor. But nothing in the passage mentions temperature, and "such arid conditions" refers back to a description of rainfall, not climate generally.Altitude is a real feature of the Atacama and it is never mentioned here. This option relies on outside knowledge, which is the standard trap for students who recognise the place name.Stillness has no support in the text and no connection to the decomposition claim. It is here to occupy the fourth slot.
Fermenting cocoa beans before drying is not optional. The pulp surrounding the bean breaks down over several days, and the heat and acidity generated by that process kill the seed and trigger the chemical changes that yields the compounds responsible for chocolate flavour. Beans dried without fermentation taste bitter and flat, whatever is done to them afterwards.

The sentence describes chemical changes that create flavour compounds, and the final sentence confirms it by saying unfermented beans lack the result. Substituting "produces" leaves the sentence saying exactly what it said. This is the consequence clue doing the work."Surrender" is a genuine sense of yield, and it is here precisely to catch students answering from the word rather than the sentence. Substituting it gives "changes that surrender to the compounds", which is not English."Bends under pressure" is another real sense of yield, from engineering. Chemical changes do not bend, and the sentence has no physical force in it. The substitution test kills this option in three seconds."Measures" has no basis in the sentence. It is the option for students who see a technical process and reach for a technical-sounding verb.
Sound behaves differently in shallow coastal water than in the open ocean. Sediment on the seabed absorbs a portion of the energy in each reflection, and the higher frequencies are attenuated fastest, which is why a distant vessel is heard as a low rumble rather than as the full range of noise it actually produces.

The sentence says sediment absorbs energy, and the result is that only low frequencies survive the distance. Something that is absorbed and then missing has been reduced. Substituting "reduced in strength fastest" preserves the whole logic of the sentence.Amplified is the opposite, and it contradicts both the absorption clause before it and the "low rumble rather than the full range" result after it. Polarity alone eliminates this.Reflection is mentioned in the sentence, which is what makes this plausible on a word-matching read. But the reflections are the mechanism of energy loss, not what happens to the high frequencies, and "reflected upward fastest" explains nothing about the rumble.Absorbed energy does become heat in a physical sense, so this is the technically informed distractor. The immune response to a pathogen the body has met before is fast and specific. A novel pathogen produces no such shortcut. Without existing antibodies, the body must build a response from the beginning, which takes days, and it is during that window that a new virus does most of its damage.

The sentence sits in direct contrast with "a pathogen the body has met before", and the next sentence explains that there are no existing antibodies. Contrast plus consequence, both pointing at newness to the body rather than newness in general.This is the everyday sense of the noun "novel" and the trap for students answering from the most familiar meaning. Substituting it produces "a fictional pathogen", which the passage clearly is not describing.The passage does say a new virus does most of its damage in that window, so danger is in the vicinity. But danger is the consequence the passage derives from novelty, not the meaning of the word, and picking the consequence for the definition is a recurring error on this question type.Mutation is not mentioned. It is associated with viruses in general knowledge, which is exactly why it is offered to students reading around the sentence rather than in it.
Insulating a roof is the cheapest efficiency measure available to most households and it delivers the largest single reduction in heating demand. Replacing windows costs several times more and, in a house that has already been insulated, the marginal benefit is small. Households that reverse this order often conclude that efficiency work does not pay.
The word "marginal" in the passage is closest in meaning to:
The sentence is comparing what you gain from windows given that insulation is already done. That is the additional gain from the next measure, which is what marginal means in this economic sense. The clause "in a house that has already been insulated" is the clue that the comparison is sequential.This is the literal, physical sense of the word and it has nothing to do with a sentence about heating costs. It exists to catch pure word association.Property edges are a plausible-sounding reading for a passage about houses, and it is entirely absent from the sentence, which is about benefit rather than location."Barely acceptable" is a real informal sense and it produces a sentence that almost works, which makes it the strongest distractor here. But it loses the comparison the sentence is built on, and it leaves the "already been insulated" clause doing nothing.
Before synthetic fertiliser, most European farming systems built in a fallow period, a season in which a field was deliberately left unplanted so that nutrients could rebuild and weed cycles could be broken. The practice reduced total planted area in any given year, and it was abandoned quickly once nitrogen could be bought by the sack.

When a stem says "refers to", an explicit definition is usually sitting right there, and here it is.Sowing and harvest are not mentioned, and this option describes a field that is planted, which is the opposite of what the definition says.Poor harvests would be an accident. The passage says the field was "deliberately" left unplanted, and it presents the practice as a deliberate system, not a misfortune.Fertiliser appears in the passage only as the thing that replaced the practice. Using a term from the wrong end of the sentence is the right-answer-to-a-different-question pattern.
Should you study word lists?
Partly. Here is the honest breakdown of where vocabulary study pays in this exam.
It pays most in Complete the Words, where you have to produce a word rather than recognise it, and where a gap in your vocabulary is unrecoverable. If your letter-completion scores are weak, word lists are the right tool.
It pays least in vocabulary in context questions, because the probability that your list contains the specific word on your test is low, and because the technique in this lesson works on words you have never seen. A student with a modest vocabulary and a solid substitution habit outscores a student with a large vocabulary and no technique, consistently.
Where it does pay for this question type is in the middle band of academic English: words like "pervasive", "consolidate", "attenuate", "marginal", "impervious". These are formal but not technical, they recur across topics, and they are exactly the register these questions target. A list of three or four hundred such words is worth building. A list of five thousand rare nouns is not.
And in every case, learn words in sentences rather than as pairs. A word you have only met as a definition gives you the dictionary sense, which is the sense most likely to be the trap option. A word you have met in three sentences gives you a range, which is what this question is actually about.

The question asks what the word means in that sentence. When a word has a common everyday sense and a formal or technical one, passages use the formal sense, and a synonym of the everyday sense is often the trap option.
Put your chosen option into the sentence in place of the target word and read the sentence back. If the meaning is unchanged and the grammar still works, the option is right. If anything breaks, it is not.
"Closest in meaning to" wants a synonym in context. "Refers to" almost always has an explicit definition in the passage, often in the same sentence after a comma or introduced by "which are" or "called".
Around 30 seconds, and no more than 45. If you are stuck beyond that on an unknown word, guess from polarity and part of speech and move on.
