Quick answer
A paragraph relationship question asks how one paragraph functions in relation to another, or what job a paragraph does in the passage. The answer is about structure, not content. Wrong options are usually true statements about the passage that describe the wrong structural relationship.
Function, not content
This question type asks a question about architecture. "What is the relationship between paragraph 2 and paragraph 3?" "What is the primary function of paragraph 3?" "How does paragraph 4 relate to the rest of the passage?"
Students answer it with content. They reread paragraph 3, produce a summary of what it says, and then pick the option whose summary is most accurate. Because the options on this question type are almost all accurate summaries of something, that method produces a right answer about half the time and a confident wrong answer the other half.
The thing being asked is different. Compare two descriptions of the same paragraph. Content: "it describes REM sleep, rapid eye movements, muscle paralysis, dreaming, and the role in emotion and procedural memory". Function: "it introduces the second of two sleep categories, by contrast with the first". The content description is longer, more accurate, more impressive, and useless for answering the question. The function description answers it in four words.
The habit to build, then, is this. During your skim of the passage, produce a function label for each paragraph, not a content summary. Four words maximum. "Frames the problem." "First mechanism." "Contrasting mechanism." "Why it matters." Do that and this question type takes fifteen seconds. Skip it and it takes ninety, because you will be rereading two paragraphs under time pressure.

If you can recognise these six, you can answer almost any relationship question on this exam. The signal column is what to look for in the first sentence of the second paragraph.

Recall your function labels
If you produced them during the skim, this step is free. If you did not, go to the first sentence of each named paragraph and produce them now, in four words. Do not read the paragraphs in full. First sentences carry the function in academic prose almost without exception.

Check the first sentence of the second paragraph for a signal word
"By contrast", "however", "as a result", "for example". One of the six relationships is usually announced there. This single check answers a large share of these questions on its own.

Say the relationship out loud before reading the options
"Paragraph 2 builds the mechanism, paragraph 3 shows it collapsing." Now go to the options. You are matching against your own sentence, not choosing between four candidate summaries.

Reject options on structure, not on truth
The question is not which option is true. Several will be. The question is which option describes what the two paragraphs are doing. An option can be a completely accurate description of the passage and still be the wrong answer, and this is the trap that defines the question type.

Check that both halves of the option are right
Pairwise options make two claims, one per paragraph. A very common distractor gets the first half right and the second half wrong, which is easy to miss because you have already nodded along to the opening clause. Read both halves as separate assertions.
Reading first sentences as a skill
Everything in this lesson depends on being able to get a paragraph function from its first sentence. That is a trainable skill and most students have never practised it deliberately.
Academic paragraphs are built topic-sentence-first far more consistently than other prose. The opening sentence usually does one of three things: it names what the paragraph is about ("Modern vaccines use several different approaches to trigger this response"), it marks a turn ("Degradation, by contrast, is largely a story of that structure collapsing"), or it states a consequence ("The consequences of chronic sleep deprivation extend well beyond daytime drowsiness"). Each of those tells you the function immediately.
Notice what all three examples have in common: none of them contain the paragraph substance. They contain its job description. "Several different approaches" tells you a comparison is coming without telling you what is being compared. That is exactly what you need for this question type and exactly what students discard as "not the real content".
The drill: take any four-paragraph passage, read only the first sentence of each paragraph, and write down what the passage is doing. Then read the whole thing and check. Most students are surprised by how accurate the first-sentence reading is. After a dozen passages you stop needing to check.
The one place first sentences mislead is when a paragraph opens with a bridging sentence that refers back to the previous paragraph before introducing the new material. In that case the second sentence carries the function. It is rare enough that checking the second sentence when the first one feels empty is sufficient insurance.
Paragraph relationship checklist
Build a four-word function label for each paragraph during your skim.
Function means what the paragraph does, not what it says.
Check the first sentence of the second named paragraph for a signal word.
State the relationship in your own words before reading the options.
Reject options on structural grounds, not on whether they are true.
On pairwise options, verify both halves separately.
Treat "disproves" and "refutes" options as unlikely until proven otherwise.
Do not reread whole paragraphs. If you are rereading, you skipped the labelling step.
Practice: five relationship questions
Each question gives you the relevant paragraphs in condensed form, as you would hold them in your head after a good skim. Answer from function.
Paragraph 2: Passive solar design works entirely through orientation and materials. South-facing glazing admits low winter sun, deep eaves block the higher summer sun, and a heavy internal floor absorbs heat during the day and releases it at night. No pumps, controls or electricity are involved, and nothing can break.
Paragraph 3: Active systems, by contrast, move heat deliberately. Pumps circulate fluid through roof collectors into a storage tank, and a controller decides when to run them. The gains are larger and can be directed where they are wanted, but the system has moving parts, a service interval and a failure mode that passive design does not.
What is the relationship between paragraph 2 and paragraph 3?
Paragraph 3 opens with "by contrast" and introduces the second member of a pair. Each paragraph handles one category and the second is defined against the first. This is the parallel contrast pattern in its clearest form, and the signal word announces it in the first three words.Nothing says passive design has been abandoned. Paragraph 3 credits active systems with larger gains and also lists their disadvantages, which is comparison rather than replacement. This is the "disproves it" family.The two paragraphs describe two different approaches, not one approach at two scales. Scale is never mentioned. This option is built from the fact that both paragraphs are about solar heat, which is true and insufficient.An example of passive design would still be passive. Active systems are a different category, signalled explicitly, so the general-then-specific reading breaks at the first sentence of paragraph 3.
Paragraph 1: Antibiotic resistance was predicted before penicillin was in wide use.
Paragraph 2: Bacteria acquire resistance through mutation and through the exchange of genetic material between individuals, sometimes across species.
Paragraph 3: Agricultural use accounts for a large share of total antibiotic consumption, much of it at sub-therapeutic doses in healthy animals, which is the condition most favourable to resistance developing.
Paragraph 4: Given these mechanisms and these volumes, the pipeline problem becomes the central issue. No new class of antibiotic has reached wide clinical use in decades, because the commercial return on a drug that should be used as little as possible is poor. The question is therefore less scientific than economic, and it will not be answered in a laboratory alone.
What is the primary function of paragraph 4?
"Given these mechanisms and these volumes" explicitly gathers up paragraphs 2 and 3, and the paragraph then names the central issue and delivers the author judgement ("less scientific than economic"). That is the body-then-significance pattern, which is what final paragraphs on this exam usually do.History appears in paragraph 1, not paragraph 4. Attaching the function of one paragraph to another is easier than it sounds when you are working from a general memory of the passage rather than from labels.Paragraph 4 builds on paragraph 3 rather than contradicting it. It uses the agricultural volumes as a premise, which is the opposite of treating them as claims to be refuted.No definitions appear in paragraph 4. Definitions are in paragraph 2, where the mechanisms are introduced, and a paragraph that opens by summing up is not doing definitional work.
Paragraph 1: A currency needs three properties to function: it must be durable enough to survive circulation, divisible enough to price small transactions, and scarce enough that people cannot simply make more. Societies that adopted a money failing any one of these abandoned it within a generation.
Paragraph 2: Consider the cowrie shells used across parts of West Africa and South Asia. They were hard, small, and impossible to counterfeit, and they held their role for centuries. The system collapsed only when European ships began importing shells by the tonne from the Indian Ocean, and the third property, scarcity, was destroyed.
What is the relationship between paragraph 1 and paragraph 2?
Paragraph 1 states three criteria. Paragraph 2 opens with "Consider", takes one currency, walks it against those criteria, and shows the collapse happening through the failure of the third. General principle then specific illustration, with the illustration confirming the principle.A counterexample would undermine the criteria. The cowrie case does the reverse: it confirms them, since the currency survived while it met all three and failed when one was lost.Paragraph 1 is not historical at all. It is analytical, stating properties. Chronology only exists inside paragraph 2, so there is no shared timeline for the two paragraphs to trace.No debate is introduced and no opposing position appears. This option is the "disproves it" family in a milder disguise, and the test is simple: find the disagreement. There is none.
Paragraph 2: Coastal wetlands store carbon at rates far above those of most forests. Waterlogged soils exclude oxygen, so plant material accumulates instead of decomposing, and a metre of wetland sediment can represent centuries of undisturbed accumulation.
Paragraph 3: Drain that sediment and the process reverses. Oxygen reaches the accumulated material for the first time, decomposition resumes at speed, and carbon locked away over centuries returns to the atmosphere in years. Drained coastal wetland is among the most concentrated emission sources on the planet per hectare.
How does paragraph 3 relate to paragraph 2?
Paragraph 2 builds the accumulation mechanism, oxygen exclusion and non-decomposition. Paragraph 3 removes the condition and runs the same mechanism backwards, explicitly: "Drain that sediment and the process reverses." Mechanism then breakdown, announced in the first sentence.Paragraph 3 is about carbon release, not storage, and it concerns the same wetlands rather than a second case. Reading it as another example means missing the word "reverses" in its opening sentence.Nothing in paragraph 2 is overstated or corrected. Paragraph 3 depends on paragraph 2 being accurate, since the size of the release follows from the size of the store.Measurement reliability is never raised. This option imports a scientific-caution theme that has no sentence anywhere in either paragraph.
Paragraph 1: Standardised time is a railway invention. Before it, every town kept its own noon, and the difference between two towns fifty miles apart was a few minutes that nobody had reason to care about.
Paragraph 2: Railways cared. A timetable is a promise about simultaneity, and a network running on dozens of local noons produces collisions, not delays. British railway companies adopted a single time in the 1840s for operational reasons, decades before it was written into law, and the legal change simply recognised what the network had already imposed.
Paragraph 3: The same sequence repeated wherever railways spread, and it repeated again with radio, with air travel, and with computer networks.
What is the role of paragraph 2 in the passage?
Paragraph 1 sets up the before state, paragraph 3 generalises the pattern, and paragraph 2 sits between them explaining why the change happened: timetables require simultaneity, so the network imposed standard time. That is the causal mechanism the whole passage turns on.Only Britain is named, and it is named as an instance rather than as part of a list. An option describing a list where there is one example is checkable in two seconds against the paragraph.The paragraph says the opposite. It states that companies adopted standard time decades before the law, and that the legal change "simply recognised" the existing situation. The option inverts the stated priority.No competing explanation is introduced and nothing is rejected. Once again, the disagreement-shaped option appears in a passage containing no disagreement.
Why this question type rewards preparation more than most
Factual questions reward looking things up. Vocabulary questions reward a substitution habit. Inference questions reward discipline. Paragraph relationship questions reward something slightly different: having done twenty seconds of work earlier, during the skim, that you cannot do later without paying for it twice.
This is the only question type in the section whose answer is essentially free if you prepared for it and expensive if you did not. A student with function labels answers in fifteen seconds. A student without them rereads two paragraphs, at maybe forty seconds each, and then still has to work out the relationship. That is a swing of well over a minute on a single one-point item, and it is the difference between finishing the section and not.

If you take nothing else, take the four-word rule. Every paragraph gets four words describing what it does. "Frames the old view." "First mechanism, in detail." "Contrasting mechanism." "Why this matters now." Write them in your head, not on paper, because paper costs time you do not have. Four labels, and this question type stops being one of the hard ones.
