Quick answer
The academic passage is four or five paragraphs on a science, history or social science topic, followed by about five questions: one factual, one vocabulary in context, one inference, one paragraph relationship, and one important idea. Skim for structure first, then let each question send you back to a specific line.
What you are actually being given
An academic passage runs four or five paragraphs, typically 300 to 400 words, on a topic from biology, geology, history, economics, psychology or a similar field. Recent shipped material includes sleep science, urban heat islands, the history of paper money, cognitive biases, plate tectonics and how vaccines train the immune system. You are not expected to know any of it.
That last point deserves emphasis because it changes your strategy. These passages are self-contained. Every term that matters is defined in the text, usually in the sentence where it first appears. "antigens, which are molecules that the immune system recognizes as foreign". "This effect is known as herd immunity". When you hit a technical word, the definition is nearly always within ten words of it, and if it is not, the word is not load-bearing.
Five questions follow, one point each. In practice you will see roughly one of each type: factual, vocabulary in context, inference, paragraph relationships, important idea. Not always exactly one of each, and easier passages sometimes carry two factual questions instead of a paragraph relationship question, but the spread is stable enough to plan around.
The passage is the most time-expensive thing in the section and the most point-dense per unit of text is not. Five points for 400 words. Compare that to ten points for a 70 word letter-completion paragraph. This is why the passage cannot be allowed to eat your clock, and why the rest of this lesson is mostly about reading it once, efficiently, rather than reading it well.

Paragraph 1
Frames the question and states the position. Often opens with an old view being corrected: "For centuries, sleep was viewed as a passive state." The thesis is normally the last sentence.
Important idea. The main idea question is usually a restatement of this paragraph closing sentence.
Paragraph 2
The first substantive mechanism, category or stage, with numbers and named parts.
Factual and vocabulary. Specific figures and technical terms cluster here.
Paragraph 3
The contrasting mechanism, the second category, or a complication. Watch for "by contrast", "however", "newer approaches".
Paragraph relationships. The relationship question almost always involves this paragraph and the one before it.
Paragraph 4
Consequences, applications, or why any of it matters. Often ends with the author judgement.
Inference. The consequence paragraph is where unstated implications live.
Most academic passages follow one of a small number of shapes. Recognising the shape in the first ten seconds tells you where each question type will send you.
The signposts that carry the most weight
Academic prose telegraphs its own structure. A handful of words do most of the work, and marking them as you skim gives you the map you need.
Contrast markers: by contrast, however, whereas, although, on the other hand. These are the highest value words in the passage. A paragraph relationship question is very often built directly on top of a "by contrast". When paragraph 3 opens "REM sleep, by contrast, is characterized by rapid eye movements", the relationship question has effectively been written for you.
Category markers: the two broadest categories, several different approaches, three stages. These tell you a list is coming and how long it is. They also tell you the passage is comparative, which shifts the likely main idea toward the comparison rather than toward either item.
Definition markers: which are, known as, called, that is. Every one of these is a candidate vocabulary question. If you spot three definitions while skimming, the vocabulary question is very likely one of those three.
Causal markers: because, as a result, therefore, given these findings. These carry inference questions. An inference question rarely asks you to invent a connection. It asks you to follow one the passage has already half-made with a causal word.
Evaluative markers: increasingly argue, should be regarded, underpins, among the most successful. The author opinion. The important idea question wants the position, not the facts, and these are where the position is visible.
The passage routine, four and a half minutes

Read paragraph 1 properly. Forty seconds.
This is the only paragraph you read at full attention before seeing the questions. It gives you the topic, the frame and usually the thesis. If you understand paragraph 1 you can navigate the rest.

Skim paragraphs 2 to 4 for structure. Fifty seconds.
First sentence of each paragraph, then your eye down the paragraph catching contrast markers, definitions and numbers. You are not trying to understand every claim. You are trying to be able to say, in four words, what each paragraph is for. "NREM, physical repair." "REM, emotion and skills." "Consequences of deprivation."

Answer the factual and vocabulary questions first. Sixty seconds.
These are the cheapest. Both send you to one specific line, and you already know roughly where that line is. Take them before your attention degrades.

Answer the paragraph relationship question. Forty seconds.
Use your four-word summaries. Do not re-read the paragraphs. If your summaries are "NREM, physical repair" and "REM, emotion and skills", the answer describing one paragraph as covering NREM and its functions and the next as covering REM and its functions is visible without further reading.

Answer the inference question. Fifty seconds.
Find the sentence the inference is built on. There always is one. Then check that the option you want does not add anything the passage did not license. If you cannot point at a line, you are guessing, and you should guess and move on rather than reread.

Answer the important idea question last. Forty seconds.
Leave it to the end deliberately. By this point you have been back into the passage four times and you know it far better than you did after the skim. The main idea question is also the one most improved by having answered the others.
What to do when the topic is unfamiliar
At some point you will open a passage on pyroclastic flows or seventeenth century goldsmiths and feel your stomach drop. Here is what to do with that.
First, recognise that unfamiliarity is the normal condition, not a bad draw. The passages are written so that a well-read eighteen year old with no subject knowledge can answer every question. Familiarity would actually be a risk, because students who know a topic answer from knowledge rather than from the text and get inference questions wrong.
Second, downgrade the technical nouns to labels. You do not need to know what a pyroclastic flow is. You need to know that it is a thing that travels fast and destroys what is in its path, because that is what the passage said, and that is the level of understanding every question will require. Treat unknown terms as tokens: X does Y, X is a kind of Z. Reading comprehension at token level is enough for four of the five question types.
Third, use the structural reading even harder. When content is opaque, structure carries you. A paragraph that opens "By contrast" is doing a contrast job whether or not you understand the nouns in it. Students who panic on unfamiliar topics almost always abandon structure and start decoding word by word, which is the slowest possible response to the problem.
Fourth, accept a guess. One inference question on an opaque paragraph is one raw point. Spending 90 extra seconds on it to convert a coin flip into a certainty costs you two letter-completion blanks elsewhere. The arithmetic is not close.

Mark contrast markers as you skim. They carry the relationship question.
Note every definition phrase. One of them is probably the vocabulary question.

This passage is written in the style and at the difficulty of our shipped academic passages. Work it under time pressure, aiming for four and a half minutes including the questions, then read all the reasoning.
The Slow Crisis in Agricultural Soil
Soil looks permanent. A field that has been ploughed for two centuries appears no different from one broken last spring, and this apparent stability has shaped how agricultural policy treats it. Soil scientists take a different view. They describe topsoil as a slowly renewing resource, formed over centuries and capable of being exhausted in decades, and they increasingly argue that its condition is the single most underestimated constraint on future food production.
Healthy topsoil is not simply crushed rock. It is a living matrix in which mineral particles, decayed organic matter and an enormous population of microorganisms are bound together into crumb-like aggregates. These aggregates create pore spaces, and the pore spaces do most of the useful work: they hold water against gravity, admit air to plant roots, and give fungi and bacteria the habitat they need to convert organic material into nutrients plants can absorb. A gram of productive topsoil may contain billions of microorganisms.
Degradation, by contrast, is largely a story of that structure collapsing. Repeated tillage breaks aggregates apart mechanically. Continuous cropping without organic return depletes the carbon that binds them. Heavy machinery compacts the layers beneath the plough, restricting root growth and drainage. Once aggregates are gone, the soil surface seals under rainfall, water runs off rather than soaking in, and the finest and most fertile particles are carried away first. Roughly a third of the world food supply is now grown on soils classified as degraded by at least one of these measures.
The consequences arrive quietly, which is why they attract so little political attention. A degraded field does not fail, it simply requires more fertiliser, more irrigation and more fuel to deliver the yield it once produced unaided. Costs rise gradually and are absorbed as ordinary farming expense. Restoration, where it has been attempted through cover cropping, reduced tillage and organic amendment, works, but it operates on a timescale of years to decades. That mismatch, between damage measured in seasons and recovery measured in decades, is the reason soil scientists describe the problem as a slow crisis rather than an emergency.

What is the relationship between paragraph 2 and paragraph 3?
Paragraph 2 builds the mechanism (aggregates, pore spaces, what they do) and paragraph 3 dismantles the same mechanism item by item, signalled by "by contrast" and by "that structure collapsing". The relationship is construction followed by destruction of the identical object.Paragraph 3 does not contradict paragraph 2. It depends on it. You cannot describe aggregates being broken apart without first accepting that aggregates exist and matter, which is what paragraph 2 established.No solution appears in paragraph 3. Restoration is mentioned only in paragraph 4, and even there it is qualified. Students who half-remember the final paragraph attach it to the wrong slot.Paragraph 2 is not about degradation at all, it is about healthy soil. And no disciplines are named or contrasted anywhere. Building the skim into a habit
The routine above is easy to agree with and hard to do under pressure, because the instinct to read carefully is strong and reading carefully feels like the responsible choice. The way to make the skim automatic is to practise it separately from full tests.
Take any academic passage, from one of our practice tests or from a textbook, and give yourself 90 seconds to produce a four-word summary of each paragraph. Do not answer any questions. Just the summaries. Then check them against the passage. Most students find that their summaries describe content when they should describe function: "talks about sleep stages" instead of "contrasts NREM with REM". The functional summary is what answers relationship questions in fifteen seconds, and the content summary is what makes you re-read.
Do this for ten passages and the skim stops feeling like cutting corners. It starts feeling like what it is, which is a map you draw before you go looking for things.
The last thing worth saying about the academic passage is that it rewards calm more than any other task in the section. The five questions are individually straightforward. What makes them go wrong is a student who arrived at the passage with nine minutes left, knows it, and reads the first paragraph three times without taking any of it in.
