About the Section

About the TOEFL Reading Section

The TOEFL reading section in the 2026 format takes approximately 25 to 27 minutes and is the first section you encounter on test day. It uses multi-stage adaptive testing, meaning the difficulty of your second module adjusts based on how you perform in the first. This design allows ETS to measure your reading ability more accurately across all proficiency levels, from beginner to advanced.

The section introduces three entirely new task types. Complete the Words asks you to fill in missing parts of academic vocabulary within sentence contexts, testing your active knowledge of word forms and spelling. Read in Daily Life presents practical, real-world texts such as campus emails, event notices, and social media posts, with questions that assess your ability to extract key information from everyday English. Academic Passages feature shorter texts of roughly 200 words drawn from subjects like science, history, and social studies, accompanied by comprehension questions covering main ideas, inferences, vocabulary in context, and text organization.

Your reading score is reported on a 1 to 6 band scale with 0.5-point increments, aligned to CEFR levels. Most competitive universities look for a reading band of 4.0 or above. Our practice tests mirror all three task types at easy, medium, and hard difficulty levels so you can build your skills progressively and arrive at test day fully prepared.

Tips & Strategies

How to Improve Your TOEFL Reading Score

Proven strategies to help you perform your best on the reading section.

Build Academic Vocabulary

Read widely across subjects like science, history, and social studies. Use context clues to learn new words and practice recognizing word forms, prefixes, and suffixes.

Practice Skimming and Scanning

Read the question first, then scan the passage for the answer. Skim for main ideas and topic sentences before diving into specific details.

Manage Your Time

Aim for about 45 seconds to 1 minute per question. If a question takes more than 90 seconds, make your best guess and move on to maximize your overall score.

Understand Text Structure

Recognize how paragraphs connect and support arguments. Look for signal words like however, therefore, and in addition to follow the author's reasoning.

Frequently Asked Questions About TOEFL Reading

Everything you need to know about the TOEFL reading section and our practice tests

The TOEFL reading section in the 2026 format takes approximately 25 to 27 minutes. It uses multi-stage adaptive testing, meaning the difficulty of your second module adjusts based on your first-module performance. The section includes three task types: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Academic Passages, with around 30 to 34 questions total at the hard difficulty level.

The 2026 TOEFL reading section introduces three new task types. Complete the Words asks you to fill in missing parts of academic vocabulary within context. Read in Daily Life presents practical texts like emails, notices, and social media posts. Academic Passages features shorter roughly 200-word passages with various question types testing inference, vocabulary, and main idea comprehension.

The number of questions varies depending on the adaptive testing stage. In the 2026 format, you can expect between 20 and 34 questions across the two modules. The first module contains a fixed set of questions, while the second module adapts in difficulty and length based on your first-module performance. Our practice tests range from 20 to 34 questions to match this range.

Complete the Words is a new task type introduced in the January 2026 TOEFL format. You are given academic sentences with missing word parts, and you must type in the correct letters to complete academic vocabulary. This task tests your knowledge of word forms, spelling, and contextual understanding. It replaces some traditional multiple-choice vocabulary questions from the old format.

The TOEFL reading section uses a 1 to 6 band scoring scale with 0.5-point increments, aligned to CEFR levels from A1 to C2. Your raw score from correct answers is converted to a scaled band score. Most universities require a reading band score of 4.0 or above, which corresponds to B2 on the CEFR scale. During the transition period, both old and new scores appear on reports.

Multi-stage adaptive testing means the reading section is divided into two modules. Everyone receives the same first module. Based on your performance, the second module adjusts in difficulty. If you perform well, you receive harder questions with a chance to score higher. If you struggle, you receive easier questions. This design produces more accurate scores at every ability level.

Build academic vocabulary by reading articles from science, history, and social science journals regularly. Practice skimming passages to find main ideas quickly. Learn to recognize text structure patterns like cause and effect, comparison, and chronological order. Take timed practice tests to build speed. Review your mistakes carefully and focus on question types you find most challenging.

TOEFL reading passages cover a wide range of academic subjects including biology, geology, history, art, psychology, economics, and environmental science. The 2026 format also includes practical everyday texts such as emails, campus notices, and social media posts in the Read in Daily Life task. You do not need specialized knowledge because all answers can be found within the passages.

Aim for about 45 seconds to 1 minute per question. Complete the Words questions tend to be faster since they test vocabulary recall. Academic Passage questions may take slightly longer because you need to reference the text. If a question is taking more than 90 seconds, make your best guess and move on. Time management is crucial for completing all questions in the section.

The 2026 TOEFL reading section is different rather than strictly harder. The passages are shorter at around 200 words compared to the old 700-word passages, but there are more task types to master. Adaptive testing means the difficulty adjusts to your level. The new Complete the Words task requires active vocabulary production rather than passive recognition, which some test takers find more challenging.
